Owner of local floral shop explains how they deal with the chaos on Valentine's Day

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Valentine's Day is something Stacy Schaap looks forward to, but it's not because she gets to spend time with her loved one.

"We still have a couple of deliveries that requested after 8 o'clock, so I'm making my husband do that," said Schaap.

Schaap owns The Flower Mill in Sioux Falls and Valentine's Day is their busiest day of the year. She said they will make about 400 orders of floral arrangements. On top of that, about 100 people will walk in to the store to pick something up.

"It is constant people coming in. It is just crazy," Schaap explained. "It's chaotic. It's a lot of fun and we enjoy it."

It's all hands on deck at the floral shop with 14 designers, 5 workers at the front counter and 10 delivery drivers.

"It's always hectic, but it's exciting at the same time," said Lori Erickson who is one of the designers. "I like the hustle and bustle. It makes your day go by quick actually."

It's just one day out of the year, but it takes about one week of planning. For the workers, it's their sacrifice they make to help others celebrate with their loved ones. Schaap said her and her husband will probably go out over the weekend to celebrate the holiday. The Flower Mill is open until 8:00 PM on Valentine's Day for anyone who wants to get a last minute floral arrangement.
