Police: Man arrested after starting fire inside vehicle to keep warm

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Police say a 67-year-old man has been arrested after he started a fire to keep warm in a van that did not belong to him.

Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said the incident happened around 9 a.m. Friday near the Union Gospel Mission on Weber Avenue.

Officers found a man sitting in the passenger's seat of the vehicle with a lighter in his hand and a two-foot flame coming from the floor where firewood and kindling could be seen.

The damage to the vehicle is estimated at $1,000.

Officers arrested Larry Dean Vanliere, a transient from Sioux Falls, for reckless burning and intentional damage to property.

Clemens said the vehicle was registered to someone else.
