Roosevelt student wins $10K award from Drive Safe SD

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - A Roosevelt High School student is now $10,000 richer for being chosen the winner of a program that encourages driving safety.

Sixteen-year-old Alexa Nelson was announced the winner of this year's "Lesson Learned Drive Safe SD" program Friday.

Lieutenant Governor Matt Michels was on hand for the surprise ceremony.

He said the money is nice, but the most important thing about the program is bringing awareness to road safety issues.

"We have decreased seatbelt deaths over the years," Michels said. "One is too many, but we've done it by events like this, by people talking, and more importantly for folks to understand, we love you, buckle up."

This was the second year for the program.
