Scholar of the Week: Jack Olson at Rutland High School

Our KSFY Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week is Jack Olson, a senior at Rutland High School.

Jack is a member of the National Honor Society. He's a track and cross country runner, basketball player, member of the band and chorus, among others, while serving as Student Council President.

As Jack tells KSFY News, he really enjoys the small school setting and says, as a kid, he didn't think he would.

"I thought I'd be missing out. It's really valuable. Six kids in my class since kindergarten, it's fluctuated since and now I am back to nine," Jack Olson said.

On top of high school course work, Jack is enrolled in dual-credit college courses, too, which as paid off in more ways than one.

"It's opened my eyes to college schedules," he said. "It's almost helped me pick colleges too because when you're working with different schools through this program, you can see how they handle your questions and if you need help."

That extra course work never goes unnoticed.

"He takes a tough schedule. Ever since he was a junior, he took dual credit classes. Strives to do his best, also helps his classmates," Rutland School Counselor Sara Holmberg said.

Rutland High School Counselor Sara Holmberg said Jack is not only a good student, he's a good kid.

"He treats everyone with kindness. Everyone in the school knows who he is, in K-12, he's involved in everything we do here. He's our Student Council President. When he walks through the hallways, he knows kids from the church, makes sure everyone in the school is seen," Holmberg said.

He tells us why he wants to continue learning in a smaller school environment.

"Being in a small school has leaned me toward a smaller college. I don't know where I want to go yet. I really like math and science and I'd like to continue that into college with some sort of mechanical engineering after," Olson said. "SDSU is at the top of my list and SD School of Mines in Rapid."

For being named our Scholar of the Week, Jack receives a $100 scholarship from Sioux Valley Energy which is a local Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
