Scholar of the Week: Katie Wollschlager from Milbank High School

MILBANK, S.D. (KSFY) - Our Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week is Katie Wollschlager who kicks off her senior year with a 4.0 GPA.

Katie is from LaBolt, South Dakota. She's a member of the Milbank Honor Society, the Honor Roll, and Teens Against Tobacco Usage (TATU). In addition, she plays volleyball, basketball, runs track and sings on the Milbank Choir.

"I've always thought my grades were very important to me," Katie Wollschlager.

Unlike a lot of high school students, Katie Wollschlager was forced to move from the Grant-Deuel School District to Milbank High School before it closed due to declining enrollment. She was a sophomore then. But she proves, no matter where she's learning, she knows how to work hard.

"It was kind of scary at first but it helped that I knew people through sports. We co-op'ed before I came here. That helped I knew people already. It was still a big change," Katie Wollschlager said. "I was sad to leave Grant-Deuel because I like the small community, small atmosphere. Milbank was really welcoming. It's still small but it's bigger than it was."

But teachers say Katie had no trouble fitting right in.

"She's one of those quiet students who goes about with a smile on her face. I've never seen her lose her temper or cool. always easy going," Milbank teacher Jerry Janisch said. "She studies now for her grades, works for her grades. She'll carry those same study habits in college. Students who breeze in high school, don't learn how to study and get to college to find it's a whole new game."

Katie has jump-started her college career already with two online dual-credit courses this year through Northern State University. Next year, she's got her sights set on NSU or Southwest Minnesota State University or Minnesota State University Moorhead to pursue a degree in early childhood education.

"I'll truly miss the sports, extracurricular activities I'm in, learning different skills I need for college," she said.

For being named our Scholar of the Week, Katie receives a $100 scholarship from Whetstone Valley Electric Cooperative which is a local touchstone energy cooperative.
