Our Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week is Madisen Martinez. She's a senior at Vermillion High School.
Like the rest of our scholars, Madisen excels in the classroom as she maintains a 3.96 GPA. What sets her apart, according to her peers and teachers, is her demeanor, her kindness and her goals for the future.
"I'm taking two AP courses, AP Literature and AP Calculus," Vermillion Senior Madisen Martinez said. "They're dual-credit with Mount Marty and they're also AP courses so I can take the AP exam at the end of the year."
She keeps up with her classwork while she plays sports year-round.
"Just got done with soccer. Basketball is coming up and track in the spring," Madisen said.
Her principal, Curt Cameron, says Madisen deserves this recognition.
"She's a great kid. She's an example of what we have here at Vermillion High School. Great kid, excels in the classroom, great leader. She is a great role model of not only her peers but the younger kids," Vermillion Principal Curt Cameron said.
He says she goes above and beyond, not just in the classroom.
"Also does outstanding things in the community. She established a group that is kinda cool. The Random Acts of Kindness. What they have done in the group she's developed, they'll periodically come in and, for example, give the secretary a bouquet of flowers. Things like that put her above and beyond what a normal student does," Cameron said.
She has big dreams of joining the Air Force and knows what she's doing right now counts.
"It'll prepare me, right now in high school, for the hard courses in college and in college, it'll help me with the real world. Have backup plans for everything I do," she said.
Madisen has applied to several schools in-state and out-of-state. She looks forward to joining ROTC and getting into Public Affairs. For being named our Scholar of the Week, Madisen receives a $100 scholarship from Clay-Union Electric Corporation which is a local Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
