PLATTE, S.D. (KSFY) - The Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week is Maggie Huizenga, a senior at Platte-Geddes High School.
She will graduate with a 4.0 GPA this spring. There is nothing in the last four years that she has not been involved in.
If you ask Maggie, Platte-Geddes High School is like a big family.
"All the teachers know you personally, and you really get to connect with all the people in your classroom," she said. "It's a great place to learn."
By the time she graduates, Maggie will have completed six dual-credit college courses.
"I feel like those really help you get a feel for what the college courses will be like, and it's nice to get those out of the way," she said.
Speaking of college, Maggie plans to attend South Dakota State University in the fall to pursue a degree in nursing.
"I've always had an interest in the medical field," she said. "I've always wanted to help others, and be there for other people. Thought nursing would be a great place to go into."
Principal Patrick Frederick said this year's senior class is by far one of the best.
"We'll have, out of 32 students, 19 honor students out of that group of kids," he said. "Ten of those will have the highest honors."
And this year's scholar fits right in.
"Maggie is not only an academically inclined individual, but she's also just a good all-around person," Frederick said.
Maggie will miss Platte-Geddes -- a place she has known and loved all her life.
"It'll be a big transition going from seeing everyone you know everyday to going somewhere with thousands of kids," she said. "I'll miss it a lot."
For being named a Scholar of the Week, Maggie received a $100 scholarship from Charles Mix Electric Association, which is a local Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
