Our first Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week for 2019 is Sydney Tlam, a senior at Mount Vernon High School.
With a 3.87 GPA, she's involved in basketball, volleyball, golf, 4-H, FFA and more.
"I'm enrolled in college algebra, English composition right now. Government and English 4," Mount Vernon Senior Sydney Tlam said.
She can't believe she's entering her last months of high school.
"It's gone by really fast. It still feels like I'm not old enough to be graduating... I still feel really young, not quite old enough to take on the world by myself yet," Tlam said.
Superintendent and K-12 Principal Patrick Mikkonen says Sydney knows how to work hard.
"She knows what she wants. I think she's mature for her age. She has an understanding of what she wants to do in her future and what it's going to take to get to that point," Patrick Mikkonen said. "She's seeing the fruits of her labor now and that's put her in a good position to move forward."
Speaking of moving forward, Sydney will head to SDSU for Animal Science in the Fall.
"I've always grown up around animals and have always had a love for them. We raise sheep so really involved with livestock. It's always been a great passion of mine," she said.
She'll miss Mount Vernon and a school community that encourages it students to thrive.
"All the teachers care about you, everyone cares about you, helping you thrive. This environment really I think helps you succeed and grow as a person and in your character."
For being named a Scholar of the Week, Sydney receives a $100 scholarship from Central Electric Cooperative Association which is a local Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
