Scholarship helps children of people injured at work

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Thousands of people are injured or killed at work in the United States every year, and the families of those workers feel the effects for years.

Kids' Chance of South Dakota provides scholarships to the children of South Dakota workers who have been severely or fatally injured in a workplace accident.

The organization says the children of these workers often lose opportunities for continued education.

"We provide scholarships to private colleges, public universities and vocational schools all throughout the state of South Dakota," Renee Christensen, attorney at Johnson & Christensen Law Office, said.

This year, six South Dakota students are receiving scholarships worth about $20,000.

Gov. Daugaard has declared next week as Kids' Chance Awareness Week. Organizers hope it will inform more students about the scholarships that are available.
