Pretty soon, part of the Sioux Falls Regional Airport will get a makeover.
The airport has started to expand its baggage claim area. It's a $5.5 million project to add a little more than 4,000 square feet.
Each day, more than 1,700 people fly in and out of the airport.
"It gets pretty congested here with people waiting for their luggage and meeting friends and family so it can get pretty congested here so having that additional space helps not only now but into the future for future growth," Sioux Falls Regional Airport Exec. Director Dan Letellier said.
Over the next year, passengers will notice construction in different parts of the baggage area.
"I think it's going to be temporary maybe a little inconvenience, but in the long run it'll definitely improve the operating system here," Traveler Paul Koll said.
But Executive Director Dan Letellier wants passengers to know, this is the last of major airport renovations for now.
"Yeah, well this is really one of the last areas of the terminals that we haven't expanded upgraded renovated so you know its good to enlarge the area, provide a better experience for our customers," Letellier said.
Crews will be working on the project for about 12-14 months.
