Smithfield Foods fined for surface water violations

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources has fined Smithfield Foods more than $53,000 for water discharge violations.

Back in August the company reported a problem at its plant in Sioux Falls that caused higher amounts of ammonia to be discharged into the Big Sioux River.

That issue was resolved about a week later.
