South Dakota ballot measures gather for petition signing event

Sioux Falls, SD (KSFY) While the 2018 election may still be far off, issues hoping to get on the South Dakota ballot have less than 30 days to finish collecting petition signatures.

This Saturday all but one of the ballot initiatives currently circulating petitions gathered in the Minnehaha county parking lot, giving registered voters a chance to learn more about all of the issues and sign petitions in one place.

“We wanted to have something where people could come out centrally in Sioux Falls, instead of getting harassed outside of every business,” Melissa Mentele with New Approach South Dakota said. “This is an opportunity for people to come out and sign the petitions they want to, have some good food, meet some new people, bring the kids and hang out on the bounce house.”

The issues hoping to get on the 2018 ballot range from medical and recreational marijuana, open primaries, a tobacco tax and more. They all have until November 6th to collect at least 13,871 valid petition signatures.
