Sturgis high school forfeits football game after racist posts

Sturgis Brown High School has forfeited Friday's homecoming football game against Pine Ridge High School while it investigates racist photos posted on social media. The school also cancelled Friday's homecoming parade.

A South Dakota high school is investigating photos posted on social media that show students destroying a car with "Go back to the Rez" painted on the side.

Sturgis Brown High School is scheduled to play Pine Ridge High School, from the nearby Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Friday night. Sturgis Brown Principal Pete Wilson told The Associated Press that he learned of the posts Wednesday night.

Wilson says the situation "hurts the student body."

The Rapid City Journal reports that a photo shows people hitting a car with sledgehammers. The ritual used to be homecoming tradition but is no longer sponsored by the school.

Wilson says it's unclear if the game will be played.
