State Fire Marshal investigating fire that killed 1 in rural Chancellor

CHANCELLOR, S.D. (KSFY) - The State Fire Marshal is investigating a fire that killed a 75-year-old man in rural Chancellor early Tuesday morning.

Turner County Sheriff Byron Nogelmeier tells KSFY News that crews responded to the fire around 1 a.m. at a home southeast of town. A 61-year-old woman got herself out unharmed.

The Chancellor, Lennox and Parker fire departments responded with 33 firefighters. The Turner County Sheriff's Office, Turner County Emergency Management, and the Parker and Lennox ambulances were also on scene.

This week is Fire Prevention Week, and the Chancellor Community Fire Department wants to remind homeowners to check their smoke alarms, plan exit drills, and make sure to have a fire extinguisher.
