SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - Police say a teenage boy is behind bars on multiple charges, including arson, following a crash with an off-duty officer.
Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said the incident began Wednesday around 8:30 p.m. An off-duty officer stopped near 10th Street and Minnesota Avenue when the 17-year-old rear-ended his personal vehicle.
When the man got out to talk with the driver, four or five people ran from the vehicle. The off-duty officer grabbed the driver, but the other passengers got away.
Clemens said the vehicle had been stolen from 500 block S. Sycamore Ave. at 7 p.m.
Officers took the boy to Lutheran Social Services. There he allegedly set two signs on fire with lighters and attempted to set a door on fire.
Officers then took the boy to JDC. Once there, authorities searched his backpack and found prescription pills that were not his.
Officers arrested the boy on hit-and-run, possession of stolen vehicle, arson and possession of controlled substance. He was also ticketed for careless driving.
