Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week: Ammran Mohamed of Marshall

Tonight's touchstone energy scholar of the week is Ammran Mohamed, a senior at Marshall High School with a 4.08 grade point average.

Ammran is active with the school's math team and served on the student council in addition to playing on the school's tennis team.

"It's a lot of pre-planning to make sure I know what I am going to do for the next week." Ammran Mohamed tells us the key to her doing well in school is making sure she gives herself enough time to get all of her assignments done.
And there is a lot for her to get done. In fact two of her favorite classes involve a lot of studying. "A Physics class I am taking at the college...that's very fun....and AP Calculus. Challenging enough for me to like it but not challenging enough for me to want to close the book every time I get to a new problem."

Physics and Calculus. A-P Calculus. They're tough classes but she loves them. Knowledge is power and Ammran likes to learn as much as she can.

"She's motivated. The first time I met Ammran she came into my office and just started asking me questions and that's what I love about students they come in and they want to know things." School counselor Heidi Bengtson says Ammran's curiousity has served her well in class.

And Principal Brian Jones tells us Ammran is one of a kind. "You'll see a couple of students in your educational career like Ammran and fortunately we've been able to enjoy her presence here at our high school over the last four years."

Ammran's parents immigrated to the U-S from Somalia. She is the first member of her family born in the United States.
She says it has been an honor to be able to have the opportunities she has had here at Marshall High School.
And what comes next?

"This Fall I'll be going to Columbia University on a full ride scholarship so that is exciting." says Ammran.

Ammran is going to study to become an eye doctor. Why is she choosing a career in Optometry? "Bad eyesight runs in my family so seven out of the 10 of us have glasses."

For being named our Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week, Ammran receives a $100 scholarship from Lyon-Lincoln Electric Cooperative which is a local Touchstone Energy cooperative.
