SCOTLAND, S.D. (KSFY) - KSFY's Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week is Kelsi Nooney, a senior at Scotland High School.
Nooney is an athlete and she is involved in the arts, but it is her passion for people and her community that set her apart.
She was a bit surprised to find out she was the Scholar of the Week.
"It's such a great feeling knowing that what I have done has really paid off and people appreciate it," Nooney said. "It's an overwhelming feeling."
She said her parents motivate her to do well in school.
"I've always looked up to my dad," Nooney said. "He's actually a nurse. Knowing he went to college and went out to help others has really inspired me."
So much so, Nooney hopes to pursue a nursing degree from the Universality of South Dakota.
"People like my dad or my mom or any teachers have put themselves out there to help me, so I'd like to give back in any way I can. Becoming a nurse is a big dream I've always had," she said.
Scotland Principal Chris McGregor said Nooney is one of those students staff always want around school.
"She's involved in all kinds of activities in the community and in the school, and on top of that she keeps her grades up where they need to be," he said. "The kind of student you want more of."
McGregor said she sets a good example for younger classmates.
"They're looking up to her and trying to be what she is and emulate what she's doing," he said.
Nooney said graduation and kicking off that new chapter next year will be bittersweet.
"I'll miss SHS so much," she said. "It'll be tough going into a bigger college atmosphere, but I'll be ready for it."
Nooney just joined the Army National Guard and looks forward to serving South Dakota.
For being named the Scholar of the Week, Nooney received a $100 scholarship from Bon Homme-Yankton Electric Association, which is a local Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
