ONIDA, S.D. (KSFY) - The Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week is Lauren Wittler, a senior at Sully Buttes High School with a 3.95 GPA.
She plays volleyball and golf and runs track. Lauren is also involved in band, choir, speech and FCCLA.
Of all the education honors Lauren has earned, she tells KSFY News one of the ones she is truly honored by is being named a Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week.
"I feel like it is kind of a unique honor, so i'm grateful for it," Lauren said.
And, as we learned, it is not the only thing she is grateful for. Lauren said she is thankful that she has been in the same school the entire time she has been growing up and that is has specifically been this school, a smaller school, which she said has led to the development of long term and meaningful friendships.
"I've grown up with these kids since first grade and that's 13 years together, so we all know each other pretty well and do a lot of things together," she said.
Lauren has always been a go-getter, someone who set goals and then worked to achieve them," principal Jeremy Chicoine said. "Nothing less than that would do."
Her high school principal said she is a leader without a doubt.
"She just gets it, you know she's got high goals for college, post secondary, hoping to eventually someday get into law school, and she has challenged herself all the years she has been here," he said.
Part of the challenge this year for Lauren has been taking a slate of dual credit courses as a way to get a jump start on college.
"I took political science, and I'm now in college algebra and U.S. history," she said.
Lauren said she has narrowed down her choices for college to the University of South Dakota or Northern State University.
She is going to stay here for college, and she said she believes she will do well in college, partly because of the teachers her who have helped her excel.
"I think they push us because they want us to be the best that we can be, obviously, but then for us to come back to this community and push the kids that are going to be coming up next," she said.
For being named the Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week, Lauren received a $100 scholarship from Oahe Electric Cooperative, which is a local Touchstone Energy cooperative.
