Tru Shrimp announced its plant to create a "harbor" in Madison on Friday morning. Gov. Dennis Daugaard, along with members of the South Dakota Governor's Office of Economic Development, were on hand for the announcement.
The Balaton, Minn.-based company specializes in aquaculture. According to the company, it raises shrimp in water tanks in a patented method that is more environmentally sustainable than traditional shrimp pods.
The company says its facility in Madison will be called "Madison Bay Harbor." It will have the capacity to produce 8 million pounds of shrimp each year, and will employ 60 people.
Construction on the new plant is expected to begin by the end of 2019.
In 2017, Tru Shrimp announced plans for a similar facility in Luverne, Minn. However, company officials now say that plan is on hold due to restrictions with Minnesota state law. They hope to proceed with that facility at a later date.
