Twin Cities college student dies in Sioux Falls after emergency plane landing last month

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) - A college freshman from Minnesota was pronounced dead at a Sioux Falls hospital last month after falling unconscious during a flight.

According to the Star Tribune, 18-year-old Griffin Gutwa of Burnsville was returning home from his first semester of college from the University of San Diego on December 22.

Passengers near Gutwa said they saw him napping on the Delta flight about 90 minutes after takeoff and then gasping for breath, the Star Tribune reported.

After medical professionals on board began resuscitation efforts, the plane made an emergency landing in Sioux Falls. Paramedics took Gutwa to a Sioux Falls hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the Star Tribune.

The Minnehaha County Coroner told the Star Tribune Wednesday that Gutwa had an abnormally enlarged heart, know as cardiomegaly.

Gutwa moved from Kenya to Burnsville where he graduated high school.
