VERMILLION, SD (KSFY) - University of South Dakota officials say President James W. Abbott has been released from the hospital after suffering a heart attack last weekend.

Abbott is expected to make a full recovery and is resting comfortably.

In a press release posted on USD's website, officials said Abbott was grateful for his hospital care and to those who have expressed their support.

The 69-year-old was hospitalized Saturday. He drove himself to the emergency room in Vermillion and was then airlifted to Sioux Falls where he underwent surgery.

Abbott has been president at USD for 21 years and plans to retire in June.
