INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – In the first edition of the NCAA Division II softball regional rankings, the No. 17 Augustana softball team is ranked second in the central region. In total, there are three regional rankings before the NCAA softball selections are announced on Monday, May 6 at 9 a.m.
The Vikings, who are one of four teams from the NSIC to make the rankings, are the highest ranked team from the Northern Sun. The only team above Augustana is Central Oklahoma, whom Augustana upset earlier this season, 4-0.
The 42-team NCAA Central Region is made up of teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Great American Conference (GAC). Automatic bids are awarded to the tournament champions from each conference with the final five spots awarded on an at-large basis.
Augustana has made back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances and participated in the central region tournament eight of the last nine seasons. This year's NCAA regional tournament takes place on May 9-11, with the top two seeds in the region hosting.
Following the central region tournament, the eight region winners will participate in the DII College softball world series. The NCAA Championships are set for May 23-27 at Regency Athletic Complex hosted by Metro State University of Denver.
