SIOUX FALLS -- A 7-0 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday afternoon at the GreatLIFE Woodlake Athletic Club secured the 10th straight regular-season Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) championship for the Augustana women's tennis team. The Vikings have now won 110 consecutive conference matches and locked in the No. 1 seed in the NSIC conference tournament which starts on Saturday, April 13.
Augustana now improves to 16-2 overall and finished conference play 11-0. The Mustangs finished the regular season 13-11 overall (3-8 NSIC).
The No. 24 Vikings won all three of the doubles matches to claim the first point of the dual. Senior Kornelia Staniszewska and freshman Laura Arce Vieyra finished the regular season undefeated with a 6-4 win over Daniela Flores and Hannah Starke. They have a record of 16-0 on the season and 10-0 in conference play.
Rounding out doubles action at GreatLIFE was Taylor Jackson and Anca Rusu in No. 2 Doubles and Annika Teske and Grace Goble in No. 3 Doubles. Jackson and Rusu defeated Paige Janka and Cora Delich 6-3 to finish the regular season with a 10-6 record overall and 9-1 in conference play. Goble and Teske picked up their 13th win of the season and 10th in conference play with a 6-1 win over Olivia Watzke and Gabby Potthoff.
Over in singles action, Augustana swept all six singles matches to record the 7-0 shutout of SMSU. No. 23 ranked Staniszewska defeated Fatima Murphy 6-1, 6-0 to end her career with 34 straight regular-season victories. The senior also finished the regular season undefeated going 15-0 in No. 1 Singles action.
In No. 2 Singles, Arce Vieyra continued her impressive freshman year with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Flores to finish the regular season with a 14-1 record overall and a 9-0 conference record in No. 2 Singles action. Jackson defeated Watzke 6-2, 6-0 to finish the regular season with a 15-2 record and Goble defeated Starke 6-0, 6-2 to pick up her 12th win of the season.
In the last two singles matches of the morning, Rusu picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hanna Himmelman to finish the season 13-3 and Rebecca Falkner finished out the regular season with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Potthoff.
The Vikings finished the season 57-1 in singles action and 30-1 in doubles play during conference play.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association came out with their second rankings of the season on March 27 and the Augustana women's tennis team moved up two spots to No. 24, the highest ranking in program history. The Vikings were previously ranked No. 26 in the first rankings of the season. Staniszewska moved three spots from last weeks ranking of No. 26, the senior is now currently ranked No. 23 in singles play in the nation. She is also ranked No. 5 in doubles play while teamed up with Arce Vieyra. Jackson also moved into the rankings as the No. 75 ranked singles player in the nation.
The Vikings return to action for the first round of the NSIC tournament on April 13-14 in Minnetonka, Minn. They'll play the eighth-seeded team, which is yet to be announced.
