SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A plan filled with big dreams and aspirational goals has been approved to take Augustana University toward 2030. One of the key elements of the plan is a transition towards NCAA Division I athletics.
The plan also includes the offering of new academic programs and graduate degrees; expanding the performing and visual arts; growing enrollment and enhancing diversity among students, faculty and staff; and investing in its physical campus to include an expanded and renovated student union and new student housing.
“This year, Augustana celebrates 100 years in Sioux Falls, so it’s an ideal time to consider our legacy and plan effectively for the first decade of our next century in this growing and dynamic city. Sioux Falls has always supported our graduates with employment, research, service, and leadership opportunities,” said Augustana President Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.
The Vikings athletic programs are currently NCAA Division II, where they've been for many years. The university will need to get a conference invite, and the goal is to have that affiliation by the 2021-22 academic year.
The vision was unanimously approved by the Augustana board of trustees, which called it “bold and inspiring,” the university said in a statement.
