Augustana head coach Jerry Olszewski had a big hole to fill heading into the new season, after Trey Heid, one of the greatest quarterbacks in Augustana history, graduated. University of Tulsa transfer Ryan Rubley is the Vikings new signal caller.
"He's got a big arm and a big frame, and he's picked up the system well so far. He's done a great job." says Olszewski.
Rubley will lead a Vikings offense that only has three starters back.
"It's going to take some time to jell. We've lost some great players from last year. But so far things have gone good, and some new guys are stepping in." says offensive lineman Sam Lee.
The Vikings will hang their hat on the defense to start the season.
Augie returns 10-starters on that side of the ball, which includes a strong crew at linebacker lead by Kirby Hora.
"On this side of the ball we have a lot of guys who played a lot of snaps last year, so they've seen a lot of things. This will be big for us." says Olszewski.
"I think our defense will carry us early on, to help our offense out with all of the experience we have back there." says Hora.
Augie expects to win a lot of games and there our plenty of outside expecations as well. The Vikings were picked to finish 4th overall in the preseason NSIC coaches poll.
"Being picked 4th is humbling. But the nsic is tough, it's very competitive." says Hora.
"Every week is tough, but we're looking forward to the opportunity this year." says Lee.
