CFB: USF Football Moves up to #14 in AFCA Coaches Poll

WACO, TEXAS – After opening the season with a dramatic 27-24 win, the University of Sioux Falls Football Team has moved up to No. 14 in the 2018 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) NCAA DII Coaches Top-25 Poll, which was released today by the AFCA.

Sioux Falls, which defeated Concordia-St. Paul, 27-24, was ranked in the AFCA's Top-25 poll for the 50th consecutive poll, which is the longest ongoing streak among NSIC schools. USF was one of four NSIC schools ranked, including No. 3 Minnesota State (1-0), No. 15 Winona State (1-0) and No. 24 Minnesota Duluth (1-0).

Directed by second-year head football coach Jon Anderson, USF received 321 ballot points, a jump of 163 from the preseason ranking in which the Cougars were listed at No. 20.

Defending national champion Texas A&M Commerce was picked No. 1 in the AFCA poll with 21 first place votes and 797 after a double overtime win over Texas A&M Kingsville, 37-36. In total, five teams received first place ballots, including No. 2 West Florida with six. They opened with a 19-9 win over No. 22 Carson-Newman (Tenn). At No. 3 is Minnesota State, which earned four first place ballots after a 49-13 win over Southwest Minnesota State. Indiana, Pa., and Harding, Ark., also earned a first place vote.

USF, which has recorded nine wins four straight years (2017) and five times in six seasons at NCAA DII, put together a NCAA DII-best 24th straight winning season a year ago. USF is back at No. 14 in the poll, a spot it last held in week eight of the 2017 season.

USF, which opened its fall camp on August 6 and will travel to face No. 15 Winona State on Saturday, Sept. 8, has been ranked in every AFCA poll since opening at No. 24 on Sept. 22, 2014. A year ago, USF was ranked in the Top-10 for the final eight polls of the regular season. As a result, USF has been ranked in the AFCA Top-10 13 times.

USF has been ranked No. 15 in the Street and Smith magazine's preseason rankings as well as No. 18 in the D2Football.com preseason poll.

In the DII era, USF is 62-19 with a .765 winning percentage which ranks 10th in NCAA DII. In NSIC play, USF has a league-best winning percentage of .821 with 55-12 mark in six seasons.
