MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University men’s basketball team is ranked nationally in a pair of preseason Top 25 polls recently released.
SMSU is ranked No. 14 in the Division II Bulletin poll and comes in at No. 20 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) preseason poll.
The Mustangs are coming off a 25-9 season a year ago, which included an NSIC South Division championship for the second straight season. SMSU also finished runner-up in the NSIC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Central Region Tournament for the second straight season before losing in the region semifinals. SMSU returns seven letter winners and two starters from last season’s team.
SMSU is one of two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams to appear in either Top 25 poll with St. Cloud State ranked No. 18 in the NABC poll.
SMSU head coach Brad Bigler, a two-time Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year and the program's all-time leader in victories, begins his 10th season with a career record of 161-110, including 112-84 in NSIC play. During his time as head coach, SMSU has made three NCAA Tournament appearances, won a pair of NSIC South Division championships and captured two NSIC Tournament championships. The Mustangs have won 19 or more games four times during his tenure, including a combined 53 victories the past two seasons.
