SDSU Men's & Women's basketball teams earn bids to NCAA tourney

(KSFY) - The South Dakota State University Jackrabbits are going dancing - two times over.

Both the Jacks' men's and women's teams defeated squads from the University of South Dakota in their respective Summit League Championship games.

Tuesday marked a historic day in the rivalry between the two schools, which dates back more than a century.

The SDSU women started out hot against USD, and went on to win 65-50. This paves the way for their eighth NCAA Women's Basketball tournmanet. They find out who their opponent will be on Monday.

Meantime, the Jackrabbit men defeated their counterparts from Vermillion by a score of 97 to 87. The victory secured the Jackrabbit men's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance. They learn their opponent on Sunday.

Both USD teams could potentially earn at-large bids to their respective NCAA Tournaments, though it will likely be a tall task. Schools from smaller conferences are rarely considered for at-large bids. The USD women secured a spot in the WNIT Tournament with their regular season Summit League championship. The USD men will have to wait and see if they earn a spot in the NIT tournament.

Both games were heavily attended, with 8,704 on hand to watch the women's championship game at the Denny Sanford Premier Center. 11,114 attended the men's game, setting a record for a Summit League Championship game.
