Simmons, Greenfield Earn MVFC Player of Week Honors

ST. LOUIS—South Dakota quarterback Austin Simmons and defensive end Darin Greenfield are the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week, respectively, for their play during a 43-28 win against Northern Colorado Saturday inside the DakotaDome in Vermillion, South Dakota.

It is the first such honor for Simmons, a junior from Council Bluffs, Iowa, and the second for Greenfield, a junior from Sheldon, Iowa.

Simmons completed 31 of 40 passes for a career-high 462 yards – third-most in program history – and accounted for five touchdowns in the win. He was also the game’s leading rusher with 80 yards on eight carries. His 542 yards of total offense are the second-highest in program history. He threw touchdown passes of 3, 76, 12, and 4 yards, and had a 2-yard naked bootleg for a score.

Greenfield had seven tackles including two sacks and three tackles-for-loss in the victory. He also had a quarterback pressure on a pass that was overthrown and intercepted. His first sack came on 3rd-and-6 in the first half, and the second sack resulted in the clock running out on Northern Colorado on a drive before halftime.

South Dakota, 1-1 on the season, returns to the field Saturday against Weber State (1-1) in Ogden, Utah, a matchup that is expected to feature two nationally-ranked teams.
