NEW ORLEANS—South Dakota junior pole vaulter Chris Nilsen has been voted to The Bowerman Preseason Watch List as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday.
Nilsen was a semifinalist for The Bowerman in 2018 following a sophomore campaign where he broke the NCAA Championships meet record with a vault of 19 feet, 1 ½ inches, to win his second NCAA title.
The Bowerman, dubbed the Heisman of collegiate track and field, is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female athlete in the nation. The award debuted in 2009 and winners are announced at a ceremony in mid-December in conjunction with the USTFCCCA annual convention.
Nilsen holds a career best of 19-2 ¾ from the Howard Wood Dakota Relays held in Sioux Falls last May. He ranks fourth in NCAA history with the height. Nilsen broke the 19-foot barrier at six meets last year.
Nilsen is one of four athletes (Denzel Comenentia, Grant Holloway, Anderson Peters) on the 10-man preseason watch list who were named semifinalists for The Bowerman last year.
Athletes can work their way onto and off The Bowerman Watch List throughout the 2019 season with The Bowerman semifinalists announced after the conclusion of the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
