Man accused of causing woman to drive recklessly sentenced

PIERRE - A South Dakota man accused of assaulting a woman and causing her to drive recklessly has been sentenced.

U.S. District Court Judge Roberto Lange has ordered 36-year-old Joe Scott to 27 months in prison and two years of supervised release. The Okreek man earlier pleaded guilty to assault by strangulation and suffocation in connection with the March incident.

Prosecutors say Scott struck and put his hands around the throat of a woman while she was driving from Mission to Okreek. Scott, who was intoxicated, then reached over from the passenger seat, grabbed the steering wheel and directed the vehicle toward incoming vehicles.

The woman managed to retain control of the vehicle, but Scott assaulted her again when they reached their destination.

Scott is under the custody of the U.S. Marshals.
