A South Dakota organization was recognized for its advocacy and promise to help bring an end to breast cancer. Susan G. Komen South Dakota was recognized for its innovative mission work at the breast cancer organization’s annual Leadership Conference in Fort Worth, Texas this weekend.
The local organization received “The Promise Award,” named in honor of the promise to end breast cancer Komen’s founder made to her dying sister, Susan Komen. The award recognizes the South Dakota branch's continued commitment and forward thinking in reducing breast cancer mortality across the country.
In the past year alone, Komen South Dakota has positively touched the lives of over 6,300 women in the state by providing free mammograms, diagnostic services, transportation assistance to treatment programs, mobile mammography services to American Indian reservations, translation services for minority populations and much more.
Susan G. Komen South Dakota relies heavily on donations. The organization is having a 5K this September to help raise money.
